Certain aspects of the dental implant procedure vary by patient, including aftercare instructions. Our experienced dentists in the Denver area tailor the procedure to your needs and goals. You can rely on our team for thorough guidelines in advance, so that you know exactly how to get ready for each appointment in the process.

Ways to Prepare Before Your Appointment

During your consultation, we provide you with pre-surgery instructions, including what to wear, fasting restrictions in advance of surgery and what you should expect the day of surgery. Here are a few ways to prepare for your implant dentistry recovery:

  • Clear your schedule for 24-48 hours after surgery. Depending on the type of implant procedure, it may take a day or two for you to get back to your normal activities. You may want to take this time off from work, if possible.
  • Relax and take it easy. Take the days after dental implant placement to rest. Treat yourself to a weekend-in with a good book or a few movies. Most of our patients feel great the day after surgery, and you can ensure you keep feeling great by giving your body a little time to adjust to the new implant.
  • Follow instructions for exercise, diet and dental hygiene. We make sure you know what to do. We also provide you with our contact information should you have any questions after implant dentistry.
  • Prepare soft foods ahead of time. Soft foods are easy to chew, swallow and digest. A soft or liquid diet is a common aftercare instruction for oral surgery. Soft food will be recommended for a short amount of time. Maximize your relaxation after surgery by preparing these meals a day or two before your appointment. Our team provides dietary tips and a timeline for getting back to your full diet.

Aftercare instructions will vary slightly based on how many dental implants will be placed. Healing timelines also depend on whether the implant is utilized to support a single tooth crown, a denture or a dental bridge.

Alcoholic beverages and smoking must also be avoided for a certain amount of time after your implant placement. If you smoke, you must abstain from doing so before the procedure as well, and we will let you know how far in advance to quit.

Dental hygiene is resumed soon after implant placement. Follow our dentists' guidelines for brushing around the dental implant as it heals. After a few months, your dental implant will look and feel just like your other teeth. You will also be able to brush and floss it like your other teeth. Many of our patients appreciate the lifelike form and function of dental implants.
