A dental emergency can occur at virtually any time, regardless of how well you take care of your smile. If you're experiencing an emergency, we recommend coming in for treatment as soon as possible.
Assessing Your Emergency
- Do you have a severe toothache?
- Do you suspect an abscess or infection?
- Have your broken or cracked a tooth?
- Have you lost a filling, crown, or bridgework?
- Have you broken or lost an appliance (dentures, night guards)?
If you are experiencing any of these situations, or anything similar, it's crucial to seek prompt dental care. Delaying assessment for an emergency treatment can lead to more complex and costly problems, which is why we always make time to see emergency patients as soon as possible.
What To Do During Your Emergency
While our advice will always be to contact our team as soon as an emergency occurs, there are a few additional first-aid action items you can do before reaching our practice:
You Have Severe Toothache
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
- Take over-the-counter pain medication.
You Have a Knocked-Out Tooth
- Carefully pick up your tooth by the crown (the top part) and avoid touching the root.
- Gently rinse it with milk or saline solution.
- If possible, try to reinsert your tooth into the socket and gently bite down on a clean cloth to hold it in place.
- If you can't reinsert it, place the tooth in a container of milk until you reach our office.
You Have a Broken or Cracked Tooth
- Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
- If there's bleeding, apply a clean gauze with gentle pressure.
- Bring any broken pieces of your tooth with you to your appointment.
You Have Lost a Filling or Crown
- Use a sugar-free gum or dental wax to cover the exposed tooth.
- Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth.
You Have an Abscess
- Rinse your mouth with mild salt water several times a day.
- Don't try to puncture the abscess.
