What Is Endodontic Therapy?

digital X-ray for root canal treatment | Aurora, ColoradoYou have most likely heard endodontic treatment referred to as "a root canal." Your tooth roots contain nerves and tissue called "pulp." It is when these tissues become inflamed or infected that endodontics may be an option.

A simple procedure cleans the tooth roots of infected tissue. A dental crown is placed over the tooth to protect and restore its complete structure. You will not experience any pain during the procedure itself. Over-the-counter pain relievers are typically all that is needed to alleviate any discomfort afterward.

Advantages of Root Canal Treatment

Our dentists find the best treatments for the individual patient because dentistry is never one-size-fits-all. If we determine endodontic therapy is the best option, there are many advantages for someone who is living with a badly infected tooth:

  • Preserves the natural tooth
  • You can continue to enjoy your natural smile
  • May prevent the need to extract a tooth
  • Stops any pain caused by the infected tooth

This last point is important. Although many people feel nervous about root canal treatments, an infected tooth is usually very painful, and the procedure is not. In fact, root canal treatment will restore both comfort and health.
