Oral Surgery - Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Aurora and Denver, Colorado
Wisdom tooth surgery is a very routine procedure that most people will have to have done during their lifetime and is usually recommended in the later teenage years. It is a common thing for young adults to have anxiety about wisdom tooth extraction. At Aspenwood Dental Associates and Colorado Dental Implant Center, our dentists treat this procedure with extreme sensitivity. We talk you through the process and make sure you are at ease during every step.
The Problem with Wisdom Teeth
Contrary to what the name implies, wisdom teeth (also called third molars) will not make you any smarter. For many people, they will cause all sorts of problems, including overcrowding, bite imbalance, gum pain, and discomfort. When a wisdom tooth becomes impacted, meaning it is unable to come in above the gum properly, patients are at a higher risk for infections, abscesses, and cysts.
Removal is recommended sooner rather than later as they can become more difficult to remove as one ages. Plus, earlier oral surgery often involves fewer complications and quicker healing. To avoid the negative effects of impacted wisdom teeth, do not wait until you experience symptoms of a problem.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Wisdom tooth removal is performed by all of our experienced oral surgeons. An incision is made in the impeding gum tissue, and any bone in the way is removed. We then remove the wisdom tooth. After surgery, swelling may persist for a few days, and you will need to eat soft foods for about a week. We may prescribe pain medication to help minimize soreness.
If you need your wisdom teeth removed and you have a problem with dental anxiety, ask about our sedation dentistry options.
